How many laser hair removal sessions will I need? It is the question we hear most before starting. The short answer: it depends on the area, your hair type and your skin. The long answer is below, so you know what to expect and how to get the most out of every session.
Why several sessions are needed
The laser acts on the follicle and weakens it progressively. But hair doesn’t all grow at once: each hair goes through different phases, and the laser works on the hairs that are growing at that moment. That is why treatment is spread over several sessions. After each one, hair comes back finer and sparser.
How many sessions?
It varies with:
- The area. The upper lip doesn’t respond like the legs or underarms.
- Hair type. Laser works best on dark hair. Very light or grey hair responds less well.
- Your skin and personal factors, such as hormonal changes.
That is why we don’t give a fixed number without seeing you: at the consultation we check your skin and hair and give you an approximate number of sessions for each area.
How often?
Sessions are spaced out to give resting hair time to grow. The interval depends on the area: facial hair renews faster than body hair, so sessions are usually closer together. We give you the schedule at the consultation and adjust it as your hair responds.
Before each session
- Shave the area one or two days before.
- Don’t wax or pluck during the treatment: the laser needs the root.
- Avoid sun and self-tanner.
After each session
- Use sunscreen on exposed areas.
- Avoid sauna, intense exercise and strong heat for one or two days.
Does it hurt?
You feel warmth or a small sting, which varies by area. It is very tolerable, and we soothe the skin at the end.
